Dr. Rhian Granleese is a patent attorney and has been a partner at Marks & Clerk since 2001. Rhian works in most areas of electronics, but has considerable experience in quantum, semiconductors and AI. Rhian graduated with an honours degree in natural sciences from Cambridge University, specialising in her final year in physics and theoretical physics. She stayed at Cambridge for a further three years in the Semiconductor Physics Group at the Cavendish Laboratory, gaining her doctorate in research into optical and transport semiconductor devices fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy regrowth. She leads the quantum group at Marks & Clerk and has served on the editorial board of the DeadCatLiveCat blog. She is a regular speaker at the AIPPI Software group in Japan.
Rhian’s PhD was in quantum effects in semiconductors in the early 1990’s. Throughout her 30 year career as a patent attorney, her PhD has allowed her the rare and privileged opportunity to continuously work in the quantum field. This has allowed her to see from an IP perspective how the technology has matured through to commercialisation. She is experienced in developing strategies to help companies identify and protect their commercially relevant inventions in quantum technology.
