Iain joined Innovate UK in October 2021 as an Innovation Lead to expand Innovate UK’s work in electronics, sensor and photonics as a key enabling technology, developing competition themes and application areas. More recently, moving on to become the Head of Semiconductors, focusing on semiconductors as one of the UK’s critical frontier technology sectors. This role involves building collaborations between industry, academia and government and developing strategy and policy, across both the domestic and global ecosystems. After obtaining an Electrical & Electronic Engineering degree and PhD specialising in glass integrated optics he joined the research staff at University of Strathclyde before joining OptoSci, a photonics systems and sensors SME as Engineering Director. His expertise covers many areas including design and manufacture of photonic systems for education, training and research, and fibre optic sensing systems for harsh and industrial environments. He has successfully commercialised over twenty major product lines.
