Ahead of Microelectronics UK 2026, on 29-30 September at Excel London, Adam Green, founder and director of science and technology communications provider Type Ventures, talks about where he sees the UK’s strengths in the sector, and why microelectronics startups should not neglect comms – even if their budgets might not stretch to building out a full office.

Tell us about your role and what Type Ventures does - what problems are you solving, and for whom?

Type Ventures is a specialist communications and advisory consultancy for companies at the frontier of science, technology and engineering. We work with startups, universities, and investors to make complex, high-stakes work resonate with the audiences that matter. We specialise in deep-tech, and have built a growing portfolio of work in the microsystems space. My background is in journalism and branded content at media companies including The Financial Times and The Economist, and we have a team with specialisms in healthcare, energy and AI.

What are the defining technical and operational pressures facing your sector right now - and where do you see the industry underestimating the challenge?

Microelectronics startups occupy an essential part of the UK’s technology industry but often struggle for recognition and reach. They need to find the right language to project their contribution, access capital, and attract talent. Our consulting firm helps them by bringing the skills and experience of tier one media journalism to bear on their communications strategies.

Which application areas or end markets present the strongest near-term opportunity for your technology, and what is driving that demand?

We specialise in supporting early and scale-stage companies that have intermittent but important communication needs, whether that’s for investor documents, public-facing thought leadership or media. When capital is scarce and talent costly, it usually does not make sense to build a communications office, but as a result many startups and scaleups are underperforming on their communications, whether at the product or company level.  We also help microelectronics and technology firms to position themselves in the best light for accessing public innovation opportunities.

Which emerging technologies or engineering approaches are you backing for the next three to five years - and what would it take for them to cross from promising to mainstream?

In healthcare, advances in low-power electronics, embedded intelligence, and wireless power transfer are enabling closed-loop devices that continuously adapt therapy to patient-specific signals, alongside miniaturized point-of-care diagnostic tools. In defence, sovereign capabilities are being reassessed in a fractured geopolitical landscape, pushing defence electronics to new physical limits of size, weight, power, and resilience to support autonomous uncrewed systems. In clean energy, rapid electrification is redefining how energy is generated, managed, and delivered through compound semiconductor power devices. Meanwhile, artificial intelligence is creating a massive new centre of gravity for the sector; as AI models scale, performance is no longer constrained by raw compute power alone, but by thermal management, high-speed interconnects, and real-world sensing capabilities. These are the biggest opportunity areas for microelectronics and microsystems.

Events like Microelectronics UK bring together engineers, researchers, and industry decision-makers under one roof. How valuable is that kind of in-person concentration of expertise to you and your team?

As delegates gather for this year’s Microelectronics UK conference, there is no better moment to evaluate where our sector stands. The UK possesses undeniable world-class strengths across the value chain, ranging from pioneering research groups and specialist foundries to high-value niche design houses. Yet, as we look to scale these capabilities, we must address how our industry communicates its value, how shifting global demand affects our future, and what concrete steps we must take to support long-term growth. Finding solutions requires pooling of knowledge, technology and perspectives and there’s no better way to achieve this than through events like this.

What do you want engineers and technical buyers to come away understanding about Type Ventures after speaking with you at the show - and what conversations are you expecting to have on the floor?

Historically, the UK funding landscape has tended to favour software and artificial intelligence applications at one end, or fundamental materials science at the other. This dynamic effectively bypasses the essential microelectronics and systems engineering in the middle, creating a recurring funding void in the enabling layer, where public and private capital arrives only episodically and is often subject to shifting application fashions. We hope to change that by providing a communications capability for firms at different stages of their journey.

What does the next 12 months look like for Type Ventures - in terms of product direction, capability expansion, or where you are focusing development resources?

We are building out a suite of communications tools tailored to the microelectronics and microsystems sector, especially in life sciences, energy and AI. We have expanded our team to bring in AI and engineering technical expertise, alongside our media experience from working the technology desks at brands like the Financial Times and The Economist. Our hope is to offer a blend of technical know-how and communications experience, which few conventional agencies can offer.
